Breast reduction

What is breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction surgery is a procedure in which excess fat, tissue and skin are removed in order to reduce the size of the breasts. Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is an effective option for those looking to ease any discomfort associated with large breasts or for those who would like to achieve a breast size better suited to the overall proportions of their body.

What does the procedure involve?

Prior to undergoing breast reduction surgery, during your consultation with Dr van den Bergh, you will be advised whether you are a suitable candidate for this procedure and your expectations will be discussed. The pros, cons, do's, don'ts, future implications and recovery will be discussed with you in detail.

During surgery, Dr van den Bergh will make an incision that extends from around the areola to the underside of the breast, extending in the fold under the breast, known as a wise/anchor pattern. Fat, tissue, and skin will be removed, reducing the size of the breasts. Liposuction may also be performed in order to remove some of the excess fat from the breasts. Dr van den Bergh will reshape the breast, and in most instances, the nipple and areola will need to be repositioned.

Drains may be placed in the breasts to get rid of excess fluid following surgery, which will be monitored and removed shortly after.

Who is a suitable candidate for breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction surgery is an effective option for women who experience pain and discomfort in the neck, back and shoulders as a result of the strain of their breasts.

This procedure may also be performed for cosmetic purposes in cases where women feel self-conscious about the size of their breasts.
